CPSC warns Memorial Day weekend among deadliest times for ATV riders

cpsc logo 100x100WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning All-Terrain Vehicle () riders to take precautions to stay safe this holiday weekend and riding season. For the 4-day period surrounding the 2009 Memorial Day holiday, CPSC is aware of 27 fatalities, with two under the age of 16, averaging almost seven deaths a day.

Government Accountability Office releases ATV report

child safetyThe Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a new report called All-Terrain Vehicles: How They Are Used, Crashes, and Sales of Adult-Sized Vehicles for Children’s Use.” The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is responsible for monitoring safety and federal rulemaking affecting the manufacturing, sale and use of the vehicles, requires GAO to report on the various uses and advantages of ATVs and the nature, frequency and costs associated with crashes.

ATV rollover kills 22-year-old student pilot

pilot 2 (2)A 22-year-old student helicopter pilot was killed early Sunday morning when the all-terrain vehicle she was driving rolled over. Reports say that Aura Corina Dacin, who friends described as a free spirit, “wild child” and thrill seeker, was driving the at Oakland-Troy Airport in Troy, Michigan, when the rollover occurred.

Maryland boy drowns after ATV rollover

polaris pred 50A four-year-old boy was found dead last Saturday night in a creek bed after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving flipped, pinning him underneath. According to initial reports, the boy was last seen playing outside with a group of children on his parents’ property in Frederick County, Maryland, before he wandered off on his own and got on the Polaris Predator 50cc , a model designed for children.

Mississippi coroner supports legislation governing ATV safety

miss 100x100A Mississippi coroner has become a strong advocate of tougher laws governing the operation of all-terrain vehicles because of the horrific injuries she has seen on the job. Carolyn Gillentine-Green, the Coroner of Lee County, Mississippi, told Jackson’s Clarion-Ledger that she supported any measures that would improve safety in her state. “I’m a proponent for anything to make it safer,” Gillentine-Green told the paper.

Federal Yamaha Rhino cases set for multidistrict litigation next year

Coffman in the Western District of Kentucky. Judge Coffman will preside over five trials scheduled to open between October 2010 and January 2011.

ATV rollover kills 6-year-old Oklahoma boy

A 6-year-old Oklahoma boy died Wednesday evening when he lost control of the all-terrain vehicle he was driving, sending the into a deadly rollover. Reports from throughout the state say that the young victim, Daniel Brock Smith-Maynard of Sand Springs, Okla. was driving the on a homemade dirt track on his grandfather’s property in Tulsa when the accident occurred.

According to a report in Greenwood, South Carolina’s Index Journal, Samuel Erik Quarles, a resident of Ware Shoals, died as a result of blunt force trauma to his chest after being thrown from the small he was driving.

Weekend ATV accidents claim the lives of 2 young women

ATV trailsLast weekend was a deadly one for two young women who lost their lives in separate all-terrain vehicle accidents. One of the accidents, involving a teenage girl, occurred in Jonesborough, Tennessee. The other accident involved a woman who had just celebrated her 21st birthday and occurred about 200 miles west in the community of Hope Mills, North Carolina. Both of the accidents happened on Sunday night.
