CPSC warns Memorial Day weekend among deadliest times for ATV riders

cpsc logo 100x100WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning All-Terrain Vehicle () riders to take precautions to stay safe this holiday weekend and riding season. For the 4-day period surrounding the 2009 Memorial Day holiday, CPSC is aware of 27 fatalities, with two under the age of 16, averaging almost seven deaths a day.

CPSC to address rising death toll on recreational off-highway vehicles

cpsc logo 100x100The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that it intends to further its commitment to improve the safety of Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROVs) and reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries nationwide that are related to these vehicles. The commission voted to publish an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) to address safety hazards associated with vehicle ROVs.

This week the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an official recall of Yamaha Rhino ATVs. What took them so long!!?? Reports of serious injury and death linked to this vehicle have been reported since 2003, leaving many to wonder if this action is an example of “too little, too late.”

Labor Day weekend Rhino rollover

Two youngsters in Amador County, California, were injured over the Labor Day weekend when the in which they were traveling rolled over during a turn, according to the local Ledger Dispatch. Both the driver and passenger were 17 years old. Their names have not been released due to their being minors.

A Wisconsin family is picking up the pieces after a tragic weekend, when 3-year-old Andrew M. Bahl was killed in a Yamaha Rhino rollover accident. The boy was a passenger on a vehicle driven by his father, Bradley J. Bahl, age 29.

ATV or ORV?

There appears to be some debate about classifying vehicles such as the Yamaha Rhino as an Off Road Vehicle (ORV), sometimes also called Off Highway Vehicle (OHV), versus an All Terrain Vehicle (). While ATVs are also classified as ORVs or OHVs, because they are designed to be operated off standard asphalt highway surfaces, not all OHVs can be called ATVs, according to a story recently published in The Northern Times, serving Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada.

Family 4th marred by rollover

All set to enjoy a long weekend at a mountain cabin, their plans came to an abrupt halt when a Yamaha Rhino rollover accident resulted in a trip to the emergency room. It actually could have been worse. An uncle loaded a few of his nieces and their friends onto the and thrilled the girls by doing “doughnuts.” However, the rolled over, throwing the girls and pinning the uncle underneath.

New York boy saves father in rollover

An 11-year-old boy in New York state was honored recently for his heroic action in a Yamaha Rhino rollover accident, which Keesville Volunteer Fire Department personnel credit with saving his father’s life. The boy, Ryan Mills, pulled his dad, Albert, from under the 2,000-pound recreational vehicle. The flipped during a turn and pinned the man’s leg underneath, badly crushing it. The boy then ran for home, drove a large pickup truck back to the accident scene and drove his father home, where emergency personnel were able to reach him.

Unreasonably Dangerous

A Texas couple has filed a lawsuit against USA, Manufacturing, and Motor, saying the is unreasonably dangerous, according to a report in the Southeast Texas Record. Ryan Rogers was injured while riding in a Yamaha Rhino on relatively flat ground when the rolled toward the passenger side, the Record reports.
